This was written originally for SongFight! last year, for some reason I didn't get around to finishing it until now. When I wrote it I was mesmerized by how many ways in which the universe could destroy the Earth, and fascinated by how we survive it all each adventurous day.
lyrics
Look at the sky, the break of night
The stars surround my sight
See through my eyes, a universe of
Inconceivable size
I am just one man on just one planet
In a galaxy of galaxies all the same
How can I be significant
If significance is something
That no human being can attain?
Look at the sky, look at the sky
One time, some night
It ignites
The black of space, no life to trace
Emptiness in this place is the trend
One step for me, one giant leap
Is still just one step in the end
We are all alone in this cosmos
The vast unknown is where we're going now
I would be surprised if we survived
Cause we'd all die
From the smallest rock that space could dole out
Look at the sky, look at the sky
One time, some night
It ignites
